Cast discs: myths and facts

19.11.2019

Cast discs today are very common due to their undeniable advantages. Any modern discs of discs will provide you in its assortment of alloy wheels about 90% of alloy, and only 10% forged and stamped. Casting allows you to diversify the design, so that such wheels can be selected for any brand and machine model. However, with the advent of cast discs in the market, many stereotypes began to be associated with them. We hasten to dispel the most common myths.

The most important misconception, because of which many do not even want to look towards cast discs, is a high cost. This stereotype is fair only in relation to titanium products, and there are not a lot of them produced. Their manufacture is really a very time -consuming and costly process, and therefore it is used only for luxury racing cars. Aluminum and magnesium are used for the average market segment – metals themselves are not too expensive. In addition, the process of casting itself involves a low cost of production process, which makes the discs available and very common.

Another misconception is low strength. This myth appeared due to a fact that really takes place: with a strong blow, a cast disk does not bend, but immediately cracks or split. This is due to its crystalline structure. But here it is worth noting that the strength of such a product is still very high. For especially thin elements of the wheel (such as knitting needles, for example), special production technologies are used. To strengthen them, for example, casting is carried out under low pressure or with a gas station. Therefore, the strength of the cast disk is no less than steel or stamped.

The following stems from the previous myth: cast discs are not subject to repair. This stereotype is not true, since they can, and even need to be repaired. It is clear that if the wheel is badly damaged, it is better to change it to a new one, since it will be unsafe to ride on one, even repaired. But minor damage, such as cracks and chips, especially on the rim, can be easily eliminated in a good workshop.
